Well JC - its difficult to give a clear answer to that. Theres just so many techniques. Ill give you a list of some I've worked out ...

•*When Using the clone tool - try changing the mode of the clone layer to Lighten and Darken to remove blotches or light hairs etc. Always use it on a new layer with "use all layers" checked. Dont ever destroy the original background —*keep it as your 'base'.

• This is a corny soft focus effect but used subtly (reduce opacity) it can give a kind of professional retouched veneer to the image: Make a duplicate of the base, Gaussian blur it and set the Blend mode of the duplicate to Soft Light or Hard light —*Desaurate slightly with a Hue Saturation adjustment layer on top.

• Make all your color adjustments carefully with Curves and if need be Selective Color and Hue/saturation. You can do these before or after retouching - but if you use Adjustment layers you can keep them floating from the beginning.

Theres a few to be going on with.
