View Full Version : CS Batch and images sorted by File Browser

I've read that among the new functions Adobe added to the CS File Browser is the ability to sort selected images on a number of fields, for example date/time created, file size, image width, height, etc.

Question for CS users who use Batch...

Once images are selected and sorted in the desired sequence using the CS File Browser sort function, does this mean that when one invokes the Batch dialog (either from the FB menu or the File > Automate menu and Source=File Browser) the images will be batch processed in the sorted order?

The reason I ask: In PS7 (and earlier versions) the order of batch processing has always been in alphabetical file name order.

TIA

Hi Danny,

I found the answer to your file browser question on page 159 of Fraser's "Camera Raw" book [figure 5-16]

" The file browser sort menu offers a variety of automatic sorting actions. If you sort by dragging thumbnails in the file browser, the sort order appears as custom."

The menu sorts shown are: filename, Flag, Rank, Width, Height, file size, Resolution, File type, Color profile, Date created, Date Modified, Copyright, Custom, Asending order. Further he says depending on the sort you want to do it is useful to batch rename files to get what you want.

Hope this helps. BTW, this book is not only about ACR but Fraser slants everything towards improving workflow. By way of a short review, This short book is much more useful -to me- than his PS CS. Not to imply that is less useful, this just taught me things to make my life easier right now.

This almost answers my question, Robert and I sure appreciate the research. (It makes sense now that this topic would be addressed in Bruce's book on ACR.)

If you (or someone else) has CS, this is what I'd be interested in confirming:

Once the files are sorted by the File Browser so the order is no longer alphabetic by file name, is this non-alphabetic order honored when the Batch dialog is engaged (Source = File Browser is specified)?

...or...

After sorting files in the File Browser into the desired non-alphabetic file name sequence, must one engage the FB Batch Rename function and be sure to embed a sequence number somewhere in the file name? The embedded sequnece number would force alphabetical file name order, which Batch seems to honor.

Danny,
Were those your tail-lights that just flew by me?

Someone else must answer this cause I'm certainly no data base wiz- All puns intended.
